How to plan a cycling tour?

There are a number of factors to think about when planning your bike tour. To start its best to sit down with the group to assess what everyone wants from the trip and riders abilities. Terrain, distact, bike types, fitness and accommodation type are a few things to think of that can effect where your ride may be.

The Route

We’re not going to lie, there’s a lot out there! The best place to start is the cycling UK website. They provide a range of routes for all levels. Point to point rides are often the most popular for satisfaction of reaching your end point. Looped rides offer a a simpler approach with less logistics needed when you get back to your start point.

Bikes

As mentioned above its best to discuss everyones bikes and make sure everyone is well equipped. No-one wants to be the only one of a mountain bike when everyone else is on lightweight bikes. Trailor your ride to your bikes and if anyones lacking the correct bike they can always hire a bike.

Always remember to get your bike serviced before you head off on your ride. If we come along and support your ride we will be there to do checks after each day and of course be there if there’s any issues on route.

Luggage

There is a range of bike bags available to different ride scenarios. These can range from pannier bags and saddle bags or frame bags that are great for snacks on route. We highly recommend the RockBros bags if your looking for something affordable and high quality.

If you don’t fancy lugging everything around for you then we are on hand to offer you cylcing luggage transport for your cycling tour.

Food and Hydration

This is a key point with any ride. For longer distance cycling tours its key to plan your eating and drinking well. Do some research into nutrition while riding as theres a range of products on the market, this includes gels, energy bars and powders.

Eat 3 meals! – Never skip any of your 3 meals, these are super important to maintain energy levels and to stop fatigue. Breakfast is your most important meal of the day and sets you up for the day ahead, rather than cereal like rice crispys or sheddies try something like granola or porridge with some fruit to give yourself some real substance. Lunch is just as vital to charge up your energy levels, even if it is just a sandwich or 2. As for your evening meal our theory is go wild (just maybe not mcdonalds), get yourself some hearty pasta or even a pizza to get the carbs back into you…you deserve it!

Accomodation

Check your route and see what the viable accommodation options are. Camping can be very viable if you don’t mind carry your tent with you. Its best to have a compact tent to save on space.
On the other end of the spectrum you have 5 star accommodation, why not treat yourself to an evening spar and a nice comfy bed. Most people think that with bicycle tours you need to sacrifice on accommodation but that’s not the case, if you want to treat yourself after a hard day, do it! We are always on hand to help with planning accommodation if you need pointing in the right direction.

Ride support

The question of if you need ride support is up to you. Many people will do a ride unsupported but if you want the piece of mind and us to help with your logistics then we are here. We can provide mechanical support, luggage transfer or even arrange transfers back from your end point.

Finally, don’t be afraid to organise your one bicycle tour. It seems scary but with a bit of organisation it’s perfectly doable and will safe you plenty of money. We are here to help for ride support to make the actually trip more enjoyable.
